I met Sergy, the captain of Elmár Sailing, in Malaga. He told me about sailing and his company, which was something I didn’t know much about or do before. Though I had sailed briefly on trips before, I never sailed properly. When Sergy offered me the chance, I felt excited but also very scared because of my fears about getting dizzy or seasick.
On my first trip in Tenerife, the waves were really high, and I was worried about feeling sick the whole time. But I didn’t get dizzy or need any medication, which surprised me. The trip was tough with the weather, but good for training. My second trip was in the Mediterranean, smoother and more relaxed, which I enjoyed very much.
One of the most surprising parts for me was shopping for the trip. It felt stressful at first because you don’t know anyone, but it turned out to be fun working together as a team to decide what to buy and organize everything. Living closely with everyone on the boat was also new—I was surprised how everyone helped, sharing tasks and supporting each other. It made me feel part of a team, like a piece of a puzzle, and less selfish.
Life on the boat taught me simplicity. I realized I didn’t need to bring tons of things—just a few clothes, a bikini, gloves for the ropes, and I was happy. The experience made me appreciate living simply and connecting with nature and people.
My second trip involved fun moments like group dinners, karaoke, and all the boats anchoring together where everyone jumped into the sea at the same time, creating a festival-like atmosphere. These moments were unforgettable.
I would absolutely recommend sailing to my friends. Even if they never sail again, it’s something everyone should try once because it teaches you not only sailing but also important human skills like teamwork and confidence.
My dream next destinations are Italy or Croatia because of their beautiful landscapes and similar vibes to Greece.
